Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has assured supporters that he will run again in the 2027 election on the Labour Party platform. In a brief video circulated on the party’s WhatsApp group, Obi emphasized his commitment to the Labour Party amid ongoing internal crises within Nigeria’s major opposition parties, which he suggests are influenced by the government. When asked about his political plans for 2027, Obi confirmed he intends to continue representing the Labour Party.
In response to a youth’s concern about Obi’s perceived aloofness regarding the Labour Party’s crisis, Obi explained that the issues in both the Labour Party and PDP are caused by the government, emphasizing that such problems are deliberate and systemic. He recalled how, during Yar’Adua’s presidency, efforts were made to resolve party conflicts, but today, political parties face challenges created by the system itself. Obi emphasized the importance of strong opposition parties for a healthy democracy and urged Nigerians to take responsibility for ensuring their votes count, noting that ultimately, voters hold the power to determine election outcomes despite attempts by parties to influence the process.
Peter Obi urged Nigerian youths and voters not to be discouraged, as those benefiting from the current system will resist positive change. He also suggested implementing a retirement age for politicians seeking public office. Obi mentioned that by the 2027 election, he would be 65 years old and expressed his desire not to contest elections in his 70s.
