Dele Farotimi, a well-known human rights attorney and outspoken champion of justice, is presently incarcerated for what many consider the “offense” of persistently speaking truth to power.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over Farotimi’s imprisonment, denouncing it as a violation of fundamental rights and a worrying sign of the increasing atmosphere of repression in Nigeria. Atiku, in a statement for International Human Rights Day, criticized the situation surrounding Farotimi’s imprisonment, noting that Farotimi is being prosecuted under a cyberbullying law that is not acknowledged in Ekiti State.
“Dele Farotimi’s only crime is his steadfast dedication to revealing truths that certain powers wish to conceal,” Atiku stated, highlighting that Farotimi’s situation represents the growing culture of impunity and disregard for citizens’ rights in the country. The former PDP presidential candidate also voiced serious concerns about the misuse of laws, such as the cyberbullying law, to intimidate opposition and silence dissent.
Farotimi’s detention has drawn widespread condemnation from civil society groups and activists, who view his case as a clear example of how legal systems are being exploited to undermine freedom of expression.
Atiku emphasized the need for Nigerian leaders to fulfill their constitutional duties during this solemn occasion. He reminded them of their sacred oaths to protect the rights of the people, stating that only through this commitment can democracy be nurtured and strengthened. His call for justice arises amid growing scrutiny of Nigeria’s human rights practices, with activists warning that ongoing violations could undermine democratic principles.
