The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 125,000 liters of petrol in Kebbi State during an anti-smuggling operation, marking the largest fuel seizure since Operation Whirlwind commenced. At a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, ACG Hissaini Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of the operation, highlighted that fuel smuggling poses significant economic risks, including revenue losses and security threats. The successful interception was executed by operatives from the Kebbi Area Command and the Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, who acted on intelligence to halt three Scania trucks loaded with fuel in Tsamiya.

The Nigeria Customs Service confiscated fuel packed in 4,375 jerrycans (25 liters each) and 54 drums (200 liters), with a Duty Paid Value of ₦125 million, intended for smuggling across the border. The intercepted trucks, registered in the Republic of Benin, had been under surveillance prior to the operation. Additional fuel was seized at various smuggling hotspots, including Dolekeina, Zaria Kalakala, Tunga Waterside, and Lolo Tsamiya.

ACG Hussaini Ejibunu credited the success of the operation to intelligence collaboration among the National Security Adviser’s Office (ONSA) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Representing Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, he praised the officers’ vigilance and acknowledged the contribution of National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu in combating economic crimes. He urged Nigerians to assist Customs by reporting suspicious activities.

Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration in the operation, stating the commitment to dismantling smuggling networks and holding economic offenders accountable. The Customs Area Controller for Kebbi Command, Compt. Chidi Chukwumeziri Nwokorie, affirmed that the crackdown on smuggling will intensify. He also reassured legitimate traders of the Nigeria Customs Service’s dedication to supporting lawful trade while ensuring adherence to regulations.
