Concerned Citizens Against Corruption protesters demonstrated at the AGF’s office, demanding an investigation into Mele Kyari’s tenure as NNPCL CEO, focusing on company transactions over the past five years.
Protesters, led by Comrade Kabir Matazu, criticized President Tinubu for failing to investigate alleged corruption by former NNPCL CEO Mele Kyari despite his removal. They cited concerns about opaque refinery rehabilitation spending, a $2 billion debt to Matrix Energy allegedly serviced by crude oil allocations, and a lack of transparency throughout Kyari’s tenure. The group argues that President Tinubu’s actions haven’t gone far enough to address the corruption concerns surrounding the NNPCL.
The protesters allege that billions of dollars were spent on refinery repairs under Kyari, with Matrix Energy receiving $400 million despite a $1.5 billion government allocation. They highlight a perplexing $2 billion debt to Matrix, serviced by daily crude oil allocations, and demand answers about the involved parties and the process. The group argues that an investigation is crucial to recover lost funds, hold both current and future leaders accountable, and prevent similar mistakes in the future. They demand a judicial review of all agreements made under Kyari’s leadership, and a commission of inquiry into refinery contract handling.
