Isaac Balami, a former member of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council and associate of the late Doyin Okupe, stated that Okupe was abandoned by those he supported during the 2023 elections. In a viral video from a memorial service for Okupe, who passed away on March 7, Balami expressed disappointment that despite Okupe’s significant sacrifices, he was left to struggle alone by those who once depended on him for leadership and resources. Balami highlighted that Okupe was unique in his willingness to personally cover financial shortfalls during campaigns.
Balami praised Okupe’s selflessness, detailing how he ensured equitable distribution of campaign funds and personally covered any shortfalls, whether it was N3 million, N4 million, or even N10 million. However, he lamented that after the election, Okupe was overlooked by those he had supported. Balami recounted an incident where, after undergoing major surgery in the UK, Okupe struggled to walk upon returning to Abuja, yet the very people he fought for drove off without acknowledging his condition. He noted that for 18 months post-campaign, they never reached out to check on him, contradicting accusations that Okupe prioritized money over their needs. Balami dismissed these claims as ignorant and baseless.
Balami condemned the ongoing social media criticism of Okupe, asserting that many critics failed to recognize the extent of his sacrifices. He described these critics as “very ignorant” but noted that Okupe had already forgiven them, along with others who had betrayed him. Regarding Okupe’s return to his former political base, Balami emphasized it was motivated by a desire for reconciliation rather than financial gain. He quoted Okupe, stating, “I went back to reconcile with people who never hurt me.” Balami urged Nigerians to embrace Okupe’s legacy of forgiveness and service, reminding them that one reaps what they sow. Okupe is set to be buried on Friday, March 28, 2025, in Ipara-Remo, Ogun State.
