The Federal Government, in partnership with key stakeholders, is set to launch the ‘Proof of Address System Initiative’ to combat insecurity in all 774 local government areas nationwide. Sen. George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), announced this at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja focused on activating and implementing the initiative.
Speaking through Dr. Nnamdi Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Akume noted that Nigeria, similar to many other countries, has been facing a range of issues, including insecurity, social vices, economic instability, and ineffective governance in both the public and private sectors.
The “Proof of Address Initiative” will be implemented across all 774 Local Governments to provide residents with secure and verifiable addresses. Sen. George Akume highlighted its significance for enhancing national security, improving government planning, and promoting societal order. He emphasized that this initiative demonstrates President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling critical issues facing Nigeria, providing a foundation for a safer, more efficient, and prosperous nation.
Akume pointed out that the proof of address system is essential for addressing current challenges and should be viewed as a transformative effort with extensive implications for all sectors. He urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to require proof of address certificates from local government areas to ensure reliable and verifiable addresses.
He stated that the nation’s challenges in fully and accurately identifying addresses have exacerbated many existing issues, hindering efforts to combat criminal activities, enhance community security, and effectively plan for development.
He emphasized that the proof of address system is both timely and essential for strengthening the nation’s identity management infrastructure. Mr. Bello Lawal, National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), noted that this initiative aims to enhance security, promote economic development, and foster social inclusion at the local government level.
Represented by Mr. Akala Samuel, Lawal described the proof of address project as more than an administrative tool; it signifies a significant shift in how local governments engage with their citizens and communities. The project’s current vision is to position local governments effectively within the global social and economic landscape.
The aim is to establish a strong foundation for social development and foster collaboration within communities. By implementing a formal identification system, we are enhancing accountability and improving our capacity to secure our neighborhoods. Lawal further emphasized that the project aligns with the federal government’s efforts to create a comprehensive and reliable national social register, which is crucial for tackling significant social issues like poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
