ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu announced on Monday that he removed the fuel subsidy to safeguard the future of unborn generations. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, he emphasized his administration’s dedication to youth empowerment and the implementation of policies aimed at creating a prosperous future.
Tinubu stated, “Every decision I’ve made is about tomorrow,” highlighting that removing the fuel subsidy is intended to foster investment in infrastructure and retain the youth in Nigeria rather than have them leave for better opportunities abroad. He urged the youth to take their role in nation-building seriously and expressed confidence despite initial challenges his administration faced. He noted that economic conditions are improving, with falling prices and increasing investor interest, creating a brighter outlook for the future.
“I’ve heard your spokesperson’s comments, and I believe you have a significant opportunity to advance this country’s development. My role is to help tackle the pressing challenges and clear the way for your success, but the future is ultimately in your hands,” President Tinubu stated, encouraging youth to voice their concerns and suggestions for improvement.
He emphasized that the youth, representing over 60% of the population, are essential for the nation’s progress and urged them to take their roles seriously. Tinubu inaugurated the National Youth Congress Planning Committee, wishing them success in leveraging technology and improving agricultural practices to empower young people and achieve food sovereignty.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, added that the committee aims to enhance youth engagement and that the Tinubu administration is open to incorporating the ideas of young people in governance. The members of the committee have been carefully chosen from various sectors, including finance, civil society, and international organizations, to plan impactful initiatives for Nigerian youth.
The Minister stated that the government is focused on creating opportunities for the youth and addressing their concerns. He encouraged Nigerian youths to participate in the upcoming youth conference to contribute to developmental policies.
Samson Itodo, a member of the youth confab planning committee and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, praised President Tinubu for recognizing the role of youth. He noted that the 30-day National Youth Conference will include virtual consultations, regional meetings, and a final conference in Abuja. Itodo emphasized the importance of keeping the confab free from political interference.
President Tinubu announced this youth conference during his 2024 Independence Day address, aiming to tackle pressing issues such as unemployment, education, and political participation. The committee will be chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and includes members from various sectors, including the Federal Ministry of Finance, the World Bank, and NGOs.The inauguration was attended by key officials, including the Chief of Staff to the President, the Minister of Information, and other government spokespersons.
