The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has suspended six key members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti. The suspension was announced by National Secretary Umar Farouk in Abuja. The move follows a May 2, 2025, decision by the party’s NEC to establish a disciplinary committee to investigate Otti and others for alleged anti-party activities.

The party’s Disciplinary Committee has completed its investigation and submitted a report. On May 7, 2025, the party’s National Executive ratified the committee’s recommendations, resulting in the indefinite suspension of six members, including Governor Alex Otti, Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha, and others. These members are now barred from representing or acting on behalf of the party, and relevant institutions such as INEC, the Nigeria Governors Forum, the National Assembly, and security agencies have been notified.

The Labour Party clarified that Nenadi Usman was not suspended because she is not a registered member, but a supporter of its 2023 presidential candidate. The party criticized her for her associations and questioned her moral standing, calling into question her ownership of various properties and businesses. Additionally, the party reaffirmed its political independence, stating it will not pursue any coalition or merger before the 2027 elections.

The party reaffirmed that it is not interested in forming any coalitions or mergers, emphasizing that it will contest the 2027 elections independently. It criticized those advocating for alliances, questioning their ability and experience, and stated that no further discussions on coalition plans will be considered.
