Economist and political activist Professor Pat Utomi has responded to the Department of State Services (DSS) legal action against him for establishing a shadow government. On May 5, Utomi launched the ‘Big Tent Coalition Shadow Government,’ aimed at providing credible opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s administration by scrutinizing government policies and proposing alternatives across key sectors like the economy, healthcare, and education.

The DSS accused Utomi, a former presidential candidate, of attempting to illegally undermine the president’s authority and warned that his actions could destabilize Nigeria. In reply, Utomi dismissed these allegations on his X (formerly Twitter) account, reaffirming his dedication to democratic principles. He expressed gratitude for the support received from Nigerians and condemned the pursuit of power and money at the expense of the nation’s future, calling for resistance against such dark practices.

Pat Utomi criticized the Nigerian government for undermining democracy, stating that while they chase shadows, the constitution is being dismantled—particularly regarding the rule that defectors must vacate their seats, which he suggests should be prosecuted by the DSS if they pursue court action. Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic struggles, Utomi recalled his past efforts during the Abacha regime, including organizing a conference on Nigeria’s future.

He expressed readiness for arrest, likening himself to historic freedom fighters like Gandhi, Mandela, and King, and vowed to continue fighting for democratic accountability. Utomi voiced concern that Nigeria’s democracy is dying, emphasizing his commitment to the cause despite personal risks, including threats to his life. He also referenced visiting the home of Moshood Abiola on June 12, reaffirming his resolve to stand for justice and freedom.
