Peter Obi has urged the federal government to conduct a public hearing prior to implementing the proposed tax reform bills. In a statement issued on Monday, Obi highlighted the importance of tax reform, stressing that, although it is a vital matter, it must be handled transparently and with public engagement.
“Nonetheless, this reform must undergo thorough and informed public discussion. A public hearing on tax reform is crucial, as it enables Nigerians from diverse backgrounds to participate meaningfully,” he stated.
The former governor of Anambra State emphasized that a public hearing would enhance trust and inclusivity in policymaking, ensuring it aligns with the needs of all citizens. He asserted that significant issues demand thorough deliberation and should not be hurried. “Public hearings are essential for gathering a wide range of opinions and inputs, allowing diverse public perspectives to shape policy,” he stated.
Obi emphasized the importance of educating the public and securing their support for policy changes, noting that trust and legitimacy are vital for effective governance. He called for the government to prioritize transparency, deliberation, and public engagement in decision-making, stating that these efforts are essential for fostering a true participatory democracy.
