The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has characterized the victory of John Mahama, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, in Ghana’s December 7, 2024 Presidential Election as a strong indication of the people’s will prevailing over oppression.
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, praised the people of Ghana for their steadfast commitment to democracy, which led to the NDC and President Mahama’s return to power.
The PDP viewed the victory of Ghana’s opposition as an indicator that Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could face defeat in the 2027 general election. Hon. Debo Ologunagba criticized the APC’s governance over the past nine years, claiming it has “ruined the nation.”
He stated that the success of the NDC highlights the people’s power triumphing over poor governance, as seen in Nigeria under the “corrupt” APC. Ologunagba emphasized that the outcomes in Ghana serve as a warning to the APC, suggesting that the Nigerian populace will soon reclaim control, leading to improved governance, stability, and prosperity under the PDP in 2027.
Ologunagba criticized the APC for the significant hardships faced by Nigerians, including over 65,000 fatalities from terrorism, the devaluation of the Naira, rising fuel prices, high unemployment, and widespread corruption. He highlighted the departure of major multinationals and increasing suicide and emigration rates among youth as consequences of the APC’s policies.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to safeguard the electoral process and prevent manipulation, as experienced in the 2019 and 2023 elections. Ologunagba called on government institutions to heed the desires of Nigerians and ensure that the electoral process reflects the people’s will.
He encouraged Nigerians to stay steadfast and committed to their goal of ending APC’s rule and reinstating good governance through the PDP in 2027.
