ABUJA – The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okoebholo and the state’s residents to recover the bodies of the 16 travelers who were killed in Uromi, Edo State.

This demand was articulated in a statement signed by NEF Spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jika Jiddere, who expressed deep sadness and anger over the brutal killings of the travelers. The statement reads in part, “The Northern Elders Forum has been shocked and disturbed by the barbaric and cowardly murder of innocent Northern hunters returning home to celebrate the end of Ramadan and Eid Kabir with their families in Uromi, Edo State. This heinous act is completely unacceptable, and we vehemently condemn it.

“The North has endured a troubling history of such brutal acts from certain regions of Southern Nigeria, and this must come to an end. In response to this inhumane attack on our peace-loving citizens, the North will take decisive action.

“Accordingly, the NEF demands immediate action from the authorities in Edo State and the Federal Government, including the prompt recovery of the victims’ bodies and their respectful return to their families for an honorable burial according to their faiths. “We also call for the arrest and prosecution of all those responsible for this attack, ensuring full transparency and accountability through public trials of the perpetrators and their accomplices.

“Additionally, we demand compensation for the victims’ families in accordance with the standards of their respective faiths.“Finally, we seek a sincere apology from the people and authorities of Edo State, along with a commitment to prevent such barbaric actions in the future.”

“We demand a full and unreserved apology from the Edo State Government to the North for this heinous attack on its citizens. The punishment of those responsible for this violence must be publicly visible to serve as a deterrent against future acts of aggression.

The NEF insists that both the Edo State Government and the Federal Government take tangible and visible actions to meet these demands within fourteen (14) days from the date of this statement. Should this not occur, the North will be compelled to take all necessary measures to seek justice for its people.

“The Federal Government must ensure that justice is delivered to the victims and their families to maintain peace, stability, and the harmonious coexistence of all Nigerians.

“In closing, the NEF appeals to the families of the victims and the good people of Northern Nigeria to remain calm and patient as we responsibly address this issue with the appropriate government agencies and authorities.”
