Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, hosted suspended Rivers State lawmakers for dinner in the United Kingdom on Monday. The lawmakers are there to participate in a “legislative capacity building” program. Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, announced the dinner on social media.
Wike traveled to the UK after meeting with political allies in Port Harcourt. The lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, began their legislative tour last Friday, aiming to expose themselves to global legislative practices and improve their effectiveness.
This situation arose after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the members of the House of Assembly. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), the former Chief of Naval Staff, has been appointed as the state’s sole administrator for an initial six-month period. The crisis in Rivers State is the result of a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
